Open Source Workstation 1.0

April 5, 2021    Blog Post

Most people works on Windows or Mac OS X, but I don’t like Windows and Mac is too expensive for me.

Since few years I’m successfully working on workstation with installed Linux system and I’m not regretting this.

Why

Mostly, because I’m Linux/Unix fan and Linux engineer so I have access to most of command and tools which I run on servers as well.

Another reason was, that my laptop is not “power daemon” and Windows was killing it. Switching to Linux allows me to natively run most of the applications I use in my daily work.

My hardware

Notebook: Dell Inc. Precision M6800, CPU Intel i5-4210M, 8GB RAM, 256 SSD Drive, external keyboard and mouse,
Monitors: 2 x Dell UltraSharp 29 Ultrawide Monitor U2913WM,
Headset: Jabra EVOLVE 20 SE MS

Pros

  • Lighter system,
  • Fast booting,
  • Good performance even with full filesystem encryption,
  • More secure system than Windows,
  • Natively available tools, which require less power and storage.

Cons

  • Not all applications are avaible on Linux,
  • Sometimes require more complicated setup.
